About Dr. Bickmore

Hi. I'm Dr. Steven Bickmore.
I taught secondary English for 25 years in Jordan School district located in the suburbs south of Salt Lake City, Utah. I've taught every grade and every level from 9th grade to 12th grade English. Primarily, I taught sophomore English and a senior-level Advanced Placement course in English Literature and English Language, but I also taught first and second year Latin. I served as a department chair, a student government advisor and  boys’ soccer coach.

Recently, I was elected President of ALAN. These means that I will be President Elect in 2018, President in 2019 (This year I will be in charge of the workshop), Past President in 2020. If you have suggests for the program and for the direction of the organization, please let me know.

I'm also the founder and director of LSU Young Adult Literature Conference and Seminar and this weekly academic blog on young adult literature called YA Wednesday. This conference seeks to bring together academics, young adult authors, librarians, and teachers to discuss the teaching and researching of young adult literature. The blog is an opportunity for me to connect with fascinating people and share my passion for this topic.

My scholarly interests include: the induction process for early career English teachers, the mentoring of new teachers, the research and teaching of young adult literature, and how preservice English teachers perceive young adult literature and its value as an instructional tool in the secondary English Language Arts classroom. I served as co-editor of The ALAN Review from 2009 - 2014.

After seven wonderful years at LSU, I have moved to UNLV where I have a position as an Associate Professor of English education in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education.

My favorite government agency is the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). During my teaching career I was fortunate enough to participate in four NEH summer seminars, one NEH summer institute and was a recipient of the NEH/Reader’s Digest Teacher Scholar Award for the 1989-1990 school year.
